How can asbestos fibers be released into the air?

Asbestos fibers can be released into the air primarily by disturbing or damaging asbestos-containing materials (ACM). When ACM is disturbed, whether through renovation, demolition, or accidental damage, the fibers that are typically bound within the material can become airborne. This release is particularly hazardous as inhaling airborne asbestos fibers can lead to serious health issues, including asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

When ACM is intact and undisturbed, the risk of fiber release is significantly minimized. However, activities such as drilling, cutting, or any mechanical impact can compromise the material, leading to fiber release.
